| Of Anthuriums and Maple Leaves Clyne L. Boodoosingh 1999, 159pp, soft cover, ISBN: 1-896496-15-6 Available from clb@ns.sympatico.ca This book is a story of humble birth, cringing adversity, fighting the odds, a wise and wonderful woman, sorrow and suffering, and finally, rebirth and renewal. The novel begins with the birth of Albert Johnson and his early years of misery and wretchedness. This is followed by his survival and teaching career in Trinidad and his marriage to Laura Gordon, the heroine of the story. When the family moves to Canada in the early sixties, they settle in the town of Fundyville, Nova Scotia, where the rest of the narrative is played out. Of Anthuriums and Maple Leaves is essentially about one family's struggles and successes in both the Caribbean and Canada. Of Anthuriums and Maple Leaves is a delightful personal novel encompassing the life and great love of the fictional Albert Johnson. Sad at times, the story indicates the strength of an enduring love which enables Albert to overcome the effects of a difficult youth and flourish in Nova Scotia, inculcating in his Canadian students the importance of studying history and cultural pluralism. This book provides an insight into the bicultural life of one who brought much to the community in which he resides. I highly recommend this book as a study of the two diverse backgrounds of Trinidad and Canada. John R.
