Ruth A. Macdonald was born in Carroll's Corner, Halifax County. Her education began in a one-room school in that community and continued at the Halifax County Academy. She trained to be a teacher at the Provincial Normal College in Truro.
Mrs. Macdonald spent over thirty years instructing in the classrooms of Nova Scotia, for much of that time teaching Nova Scotian history to grade six students. She became aware of the large number of "notable" Nova Scotians, as well as of the many significant events and occurrences that took place here. This, along with the fact that she was convinced Nova Scotians do not get enough credit for their accomplishments, inspired her to start this collection of Nova Scotia "firsts." In retirement, she continued to research and document this fascinating subject. This book consolidates Mrs. Macdonald's efforts.
The book is enhanced by the photography by her daughter, Anne E. Macdonald, and the editing by her son, Eric L. Macdonald.
Anyone with an interest in the history of Nova Scotia will find A Collection of Nova Scotia Firsts an invaluable source of information and an exciting addition to their library.
