| Burlap and Lace: Poems and Short Narratives Gloria Ann Wesley Soft cover, ISBN: 978-0-9783463-0-0, 62 pp. $15.99 at bookstores: Coles, Halifax Shopping Centre; Chapters, Bayers Lake; and Carrefours Emporium, Halifax Historic Properties. “Burlap and Lace, as the title implies, is a collection of poetry subtle in expression, gentle in metaphor; strong in feeling; it is full of controlled anger, generous in forgiveness and full of hope, joy, humour and interesting people.” — Sheldon Currie, author of The Glace Bay Miners’ Museum and Down the Coaltown Road, among other works “Gloria Wesley’s verse marries the ordinary to the sublime, tragedy to transcendence, past to present. Her rich images and often heart-rending descriptions take us into Wesley’s world of growing up in Nova Scotia as a person of African descent. These poems lead us on a valuable, much-needed journey that enriches, informs and inspires.”—Percy A. Paris, MLA, Waverley–Fall River–Beaver Bank “These poems reach into meaning through love, humour, experience and candid revelation. Gloria wields a deft and delicate pen. It transforms lines of words into poetic glimpses of a culture that has experienced the worst kind of suppression but is now in the ascendant.” — Russell Barton, creative writing instructor, author of The Way of the Story Gloria Ann Wesley’s book, To My Someday Child (1975), was the first published book of poetry in Canada by a Black author. Her second work, Woman, Sing, was published in 2002. Her poetry is also included in two anthologies: Other Voices: Writings by Blacks in Canada (1985) and Fire on the Water: An Anthology of Black Nova Scotian Writers (1992). Gloria Wesley was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. She graduated with a degree in education from St. Francis Xavier University and went on to teach in schools across the province. She lives in Halifax and runs her own business, Creative Expressions Consulting. |
